Man Boobs & Gynaecomastia
Gynaecomastia derives from the Greek word meaning “female-like breasts” and occurs when firm breast tissue grows under the nipples of men. Breasts can look swollen, rounded and protruding and can become tender. One or both breasts can be affected and 90% of boys experience this during puberty due to hormone imbalances, but the condition usually disappears within a few years. However, around 10% of young men continue to suffer with the disorder during adulthood. This is a result of the body containing excessive amounts of the female hormone oestrogen. Illegal drugs, certain types of steroids, excessive alcohol, dramatic weight loss, and ageing have also been linked as causes of Gynaecomastia.
False and Armpit Gynecomastia
Overweight men can develop ‘man boobs’ which are caused by excess fat deposits as a result of a poor diet and lack of physical activity. False Gynaecomastia or Pseudogynecomastia does not result in abnormal tissue growth like in real Gynaecomastia. Exercise and a healthy diet can help to improve things, but some men find that this doesn’t always work for them. Your doctor or surgeon will be able to assess what is causing your ‘man boobs’ and advise on the best choices available for your specific situation.
